Marine Geospatial Ecology Tools: An integrated framework for ecological geoprocessing with ArcGIS, Python, R, MATLAB, and C++

چکیده
With the arrival of GPS, satellite remote sensing, and personal computers, the last two decades have witnessed rapid advances in the field of spatially-explicit marine ecological modeling. But with this innovation has come complexity. To keep up, ecologists must master multiple specialized software packages, such as ArcGIS for display and manipulation of geospatial data, R for statistical analysis, and MATLAB for matrix processing. This requires a costly investment of time and energy learning computer programming, a high hurdle for many ecologists. To provide easier access to advanced analytic methods, we developed Marine Geospatial Ecology Tools (MGET), an extensible collection of powerful, easy-to-use, open-source geoprocessing tools that ecologists can invoke from ArcGIS without resorting to computer programming. Internally, MGET integrates Python, R, MATLAB, and Cþþ, bringing the power of these specialized platforms to tool developers without requiring developers to orchestrate the interoperability

geneGIS: Geoanalytical Tools and Arc Marine Customization for Individual-Based Genetic Records
To improve understanding of population structure, ecosystem relationships and predictive models of human impact in cetaceans and other marine megafauna, we developed geneGIS, a suite of GIS tools and a customized Arc Marine data model to facilitate visual exploration and spatial analyses of individual-based records from DNA profiles and photo-identification records. We used the open source prog...

The Tropical Marine Science Institute (TMSI) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) generates huge amounts of predicted tidal currents data every day. The data are used for a hydrodynamics forecast system of the Singapore Strait. This paper deals with the access, extraction, and visualization of those spatial data, stored in netCDF (network Common Data Format) file format. The expected s...

The quantification of landscape structures is an important part in many ecological analysis dealing with GIS derived satellite data. This paper introduces a new free and open-source tool for conducting landscape ecology analysis. LecoS is able to compute a variety of basic and advanced landscape metrics in an automatized way by iterating through an optional provided vector layer. It is integrat...

Article history: Received 29 December 2006 Received in revised form 20 June 2007 Accepted 30 July 2007 Our ability to informconservation andmanagement of species is fundamentally limited by the availability of relevant biogeographic data, use of statistically robust predictive models, and presentation of results to decision makers. Despite the ubiquity of presence-only models, where available, ...
متن کاملDesign and Experience of Generalization Tools
While research is underway at ESRI on solutions for adaptive and contextual generalization, the development of bulk generalization tools under the geoprocessing framework in ArcGIS has continued. One of the essential design aspects is to extend and redefine the scope of automation. Another is how to support the evaluation and further optimization of the output. It is obviously important to use ...
